In the early 1900s, concert dance changed forever. In this time, dancers and choreographers such as Isadora Duncan and Mary Wigman began a heated rebellion against the strict confines of movement outlined in classical ballet. The new dance form was to be called contemporary dance, because it eschews the structure of ballet, and allows both the dancer and the choreographer to express themselves using a wider and less restrictive vocabulary of movement.
