José Limón was born in 1908 in Mexico and moved to New York after spending a year studying visual arts at UCLA. He became inspired to dance from watching a performance in the US, and dedicated himself to study for 10 years with modern dance greats Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman.

In 1946, Limón formed his own dance company. He was quickly recognized as a master of dance, and choreographed such works as The Moor's Pavane, There is a Time, Missa Brevis, Psalm, and The Winged. Limón's works and technique remain a strong influence on contemporary dance practice to this day.

Here is a video of the Limón Dance Company performing one of their famous works, The Traitor.
